Tororo

Tororo - like Uganda in general - is a very safe town. Unfortunately several countries in the East african region are troubled by conflicts and violences, but Uganda is a safe country for tourists with a friendly population and very little crime.

Formerly named Bukedi District until 1980, Tororo District is one of Uganda’s oldest districts.

Tororo district is situated in the eastern side of Uganda on the Kenya - Uganda – Malaba Border post.

Like other Ugandan districts, Tororo District is named after its "chief town", Tororo.
From the Eastern side, Tororo District is bordered by the Republic of Kenya, in the south lies Busia District, Bugiri District & Iganga District in the west and Mbale District in the northeast.



Supporting a population of 490,000 residents, including indigenous Ugandans, Indians and Europeans, Tororo Town is one of Uganda’s oldest and popular towns. The Tororo Cement Industry – Uganda’s main cement plant & cross border trade gave boom to Tororo District and the status of one of the most prosperous town in Uganda over the last decades.

There is a good blend of ethnic groups & rich culture values among the Tororo people and for many decades, these people have lived side – by – side each other in peace & harmony.

Indegenous ethnic groups in the area include; Jopadhola, Iteso, Samia, Bagwere and Banyoli. Languages spoken correlate to the ethnicities of the population, and languages include; Dhopadhola, Lusamia, Ateso, Lugwere and Lunyoli.

In the urban centres, English, Swahili and Luganda is spoken and/or understood
